Sri Dalada Maligawa, the golden-roofed Temple of the Sacred Tooth is located north of the lake. According to the legend, Buddha’s left canine tooth was retrieved from the funeral pyre, smuggled to Sri Lanka in 313 AD and found its final place enshrined at the stunning 17th-century temple. Up to the present day, it is worshipped by white-clad pilgrims, bearing lotus blossoms and frangipani. Viyana Boutique is only 500 m away, so you can enjoy an easy, scenic walk to get there.

Along the way you will pass Kandy’s most famous attraction, the Temple of the Tooth, the National Museum, located in a part of the former Royal Palace, as well as the Kandyan Art Association & Cultural Centre, where dance and drumming performances are shown daily. Less known but definitely worth a visit is the Garrison Cemetery, which is a short walk uphill behind the National Museum.

The Elephant Orphanage started off with the introduction of five abandoned baby elephants to the premises in 1975. Today, Pinnawala is notable for having the largest herd of captive elephants in the world. The aim of the orphanage is to simulate a natural habitat to these elephants. However, there are some exceptions: the elephants are taken to the river twice a day for a bath, and all the babies less than three years of age are still bottle fed. The main attraction is clearly to observe the elephants bathing which is quite a spectacle.

The Royal Botanical Gardens are located in Peradeniya, 5,5 km west of the city. They were formally established in 1843. More than 4000 species of plants, including orchids, spices, medicinal plants and palm trees are cultivated here. Make sure you have plenty of time to stroll through this very well cultivated and spacious area.

This temple, built in 1344, is located on a small hilltop and famous for its beautiful stone carvings. The chief architect has been an Indian called Ganesvarachari, therefore the design is essentially South Indian. Once you are in the summit, you can get a good view of the surrounding area from here.

Also called Embekka Devalaya, the temple offers an excellent insight into the medieval style of architecture adopted in Sri Lanka. Some of the finest examples of wood carvings can be witnessed here, for instance, the mother and child carving at the entrance.

Situated about 5km away from the Gadaladeniya temple there is another ancient temple. Mounted on a rocky bluff, is divided into two halves – one half Buddhist and one half Hindu. It features a Buddha image, Kandy-period paintings, rockface inscriptions and stone elephant figures.
